Paytm Confirms Completion of Event Ticketing Sale to Zomato Amid Strategic Shift
Zomato, a leading food delivery platform, has successfully acquired Paytm’s event ticketing subsidiaries, Wasteland Entertainment Private Limited (WEPL) and Orbgen Technologies Private Limited (OTPL), as confirmed in an exchange filing. These subsidiaries operate the popular ticketing platforms TicketNew and Insider, respectively.
According to reports, on June 16, Zomato was in discussions to acquire Paytm Insider as part of its strategy to expand its “going-out” services. Paytm also announced that the transfer of its events and movie ticketing operations to Zomato was finalized on August 27. The acquisition is valued at ₹2,048 crore, a figure both companies disclosed on August 21.
To ensure a seamless user experience, movie and event tickets will still be available on the Paytm app and the TicketNew and Insider platforms for a transition period of up to 12 months. Additionally, around 280 employees from Paytm’s entertainment ticketing division will be integrated into Zomato.
This acquisition marks a pivotal move for Zomato as it diversifies its business beyond food delivery, following its aggressive investments in the quick commerce sector. On August 1, Zomato announced plans to launch a new app named District, aimed at enhancing its offerings in the going-out market, establishing it as the company’s third major consumer-facing vertical alongside food delivery and quick commerce.
